In early 2015, I watched a YouTube video of someone making their own laundry detergent liquid. I was amazed because I had no idea it was possible to make such things. And at such a cheap price too!
I set about trying to find recipes for making laundry detergent powder because I thought it would be easier to store and less likely to build up any slimy gunk inside the washing machine dispenser drawer.
After various experiments, I found a recipe that is all natural, takes just a few minutes to make enough to keep us in laundry detergent for the best part of a year, and is super inexpensive. And best of all, it works just as well, if not better, than big brand detergent.
Ingredients
1 cup Soda Crystals
1 cup Borax/Borax Substitute
1 cup grated Laundry Soap
Method
You can do this by hand, but my preference is to do everything in my food processor. Using a food processor makes it really quick to produce large quantities. I tend to double up the ingredients and repeat until I have filled our laundry powder container. This gives us enough laundry powder for about a year (and I do laundry daily).
- Grate the laundry soap.
- Add the dry ingredients.
- Mix.
- Transfer to airtight container.
To Use
Most loads of laundry will only need 1tbsp per load. If you have an especially soiled load, then add 2tbsp.
In place of shop bought fabric conditioner, we use white vinegar.
And for whites, we use hydrogen peroxide to pre-treat, or add a scoop of Vanish Oxi-Action powder to the pre-wash.
